Summary edit

Description

House of Zozas

A spacious residence uncovered in the southeast sector of the city evidently belonged to a person named Zosas, as recorded in an inscription on the mosaic emblem on the floor of the central hall. Most of the rooms in the building had mosaic floors decorated with geometric patterns and panels with depictions of birds. A strange construction with three cists lined with marble is preserved in the central hall, while a shrine alcove with pedestral of a small statue survives in the southeast room.

House of Leda

The house of Zosas was but a stone's throw from the south wall of the city and separated by only a narrow cobbled passage from the adjacent «House of Leda», which owes its conventional name to a table support with representation of Leda and the swan sculptured in the round, which adorned the formal hall of the residence. Set on the south of the hall were two other table supports, one with a representation of Dionysos in relaxed pose, and the other with a hybrid figure, with head and foot of a lion. Two sculptured busts of children, with the distinctive hairstyle of devotees of the goddess Isis, were also found in the same room.
