English: Hull Fair Looking north along Walton Street from the Brickmakers Arms pub, which is completely hidden behind the huge tombola stall on the left.
The fair is one of the oldest charter fairs still in existence, the old town of Wyke upon Hull having been granted its first charter giving permission for a fair on the 10th November 1279, and further charters being issued to the new city of Kingston upon Hull on 1st July 1293 and again on 1 Apr 1299. After a number of changes in venue, Hull Fair moved to its present home on Walton Street near West Park in October 1888. The original eight acre site was increased to fourteen acres in 1906 making it the largest travelling fair in England. After more than seven hundred years, the week long fair in October is still one of the most popular events on the city's calendar. More information on the fair and its history can be found here: http://www.hullfair.net/index.htm |
