Nederlands: Ongeveer acht jaar geleden zagen Bert Nijkamp en Elma Bartels op weg naar hun werk 's morgens in het voorjaar honderden padden dood op en langs de Deldensestraat liggen. Zij vormen al meer dan zes jaar samen met 12 anderen de groep paddenrapers van Padden Nu. Ze rapen de padden op die ze vervoeren in een emmer vervoeren en naar de wateren bij de Doorbraak brengen. Op die manier worden ze van een gewisse dood gered.
Uit onderzoek is gebleken dat dit is gekomen door de aanleg van de Doorbraak. De padden bleken de poeltjes in en rond de Doorbraak gevonden te hebben voor onder andere de paring. Padden trekken in het voorjaar massaal vanuit het bos naar watergelegenheden. In het geval bij het Nijreesbos trekken de padden steeds vanuit de rechter zijde van het bos (vanuit Almelo gezien) naar de overkant van de weg. De gemeente bood steun door een paddentunnel aan te leggen. Er gaan sindsdien veel padden door de tunnel, maar ook andere kleine dieren als salamanders en kikkers maken er gebruik van. Eigenlijk zouden er meer tunnels moeten komen maar het geld is op. |
