Summary edit

Description This a Calotype print from 1845, it shows Brunel's Hungerford Bridge from what became Victoria Embankment. The bridge was built in 1845 as a footbridge from Hungerford Market on the north bank to a steamer pier on the south bank. In 1859 the bridge was purchased by the South Eastern Railway Company who rebuilt it as a railway bridge. The chains from the bridge were reused by Brunel for his Clifton suspension bridge in Bristol.
