DescriptionHunstanton - St Edmund's Point - Lighthouse - coat of arms (5955578680).jpg |
We headed towards the cliff car park, but it was too windy and cold. Never the less I got out the car to take photos of these old buildings. Area is called St Edmund's Point. On Lighthouse Close. The old Lighthouse. In use on this site from 1665 to 1921. In 1776 it had the world's first parabolic reflector. A lighthouse has been on this site since 1665, at first a wooden structure supporting a fire beacon. In the early days the lights were called Chapel Lights (after St. Edmund's Chapel), with the world's first parabolic reflector being built here in 1776. The present lighthouse was erected in 1840 later to become the first tourist attraction for the new resort of New Hunstanton. The light was extinguished in 1922 and together with the adjoining cottages, auctioned for £1300. Sold again in 1964 for £4760 and again in 1996 for £135,000, it is now a private residence. It is Grade II listed. The Lighthouse - Hunstanton - Heritage Gateway Former lighthouse and cottages attached to north. C.1830. Rendered stuccoed brick, slated roofs. Circular, battered tower of classical derived inspiration. 4 storeys. Coat of arms at base, single round headed windows to each floor. Massive modillion blocks form brackets for gallery with iron balcony encircling a canted top-storey with C20 termination above. Cottage attached to north, originally balanced by another to south since demolished. Gothick. 2 storey gable with ground-floor pedimented bay window, first floor cross window with drip mould. C20 casements inserted. Kneelers and coped parapets, roof replaced and stacks to north cut down. Door with rusticated dressings in wing connecting with lighthouse.
