Cette région montagneuse, qui faisait essentiellement partie de l'Autriche-Hongrie avant la Première Guerre mondiale, fut intégrée au nouvel État tchécoslovaque en 1919. Aujourd'hui, la majeure partie de la Ruthénie subcarpatique forme l'oblast de Transcarpatie, dans l'ouest de l'Ukraine, avec des terres plus petites en Slovaquie et en Pologne. Cette photographie présente un groupe de femmes houtsoules et un enfant. Les Houtsoules constituent un groupe ethnique et culturel qui parle un dialecte de l'ukrainien influencé par le polonais. Today the largest portion of it forms Zakarpattia Oblast in western Ukraine, with smaller parts in Slovakia and Poland. This image shows a group of Hutsul women with a child. The Hutsuls are an ethnic and cultural group who speak a dialect of Ukrainian, influenced by Polish. They have lived in Ruthenian Carpathia for centuries. The women wear a long linen blouse, drawn in around the neck by embroidered threads, over which are worn two aprons (zapasky), woven in narrow stripes of red wool with silver and gold thread details.
