Irakoze Samuel, 11, pushes his wheelchair to school while wearing face mask to protect his life from Covid-19.

Summary edit

Description
English: In the current world situation, there’s no definition of wellness caring for health as wearing properly your facemask.

Samuel Irakoze, 11, is a disabled school kid. He’s in 3rd year in primary school. I photographed him when I met him pushing his wheelchair to school in the town of Huye in southern Rwanda.

He wasn’t born like this, as he told me. But a year ago, he slipped, fell, and broke his back when he was coming from collecting cooking woods but his family’s financial capabilities couldn’t allow him to get operation in time. But now he has hope that he won’t forever sit in the wheelchair because there’s an NGO that is covering his operation costs. Now, he pushes his wheelchair almost 3 km to school every day because he believes that education is his only way out of poverty. He does so while observing COVID-19 prevention measures such as wearing the mask properly because he learned that people with poor health such as his are the most vulnerable to the virus.
