knew how pretty and becomingthis forehead band is they would wear something like ittoo. Ustynias eyes were bright, and a pleasant smileplayed about her lips. When she laughed—and thesepeople are always laughing—she betrayed the mostperfectly beautiful teeth it is possible to imagine. In-deed all these people, even old Uano, had most wonder-ful teeth—white, regular, and perfectly shaped. On herfingers Ustynia wore heavy rings of white and yellowmetal, and her hands, like those of all Samoyeds, werefaultless in shape and extraordinarily supple. If you addto this a dress reaching to the knees, formed of youngreindeer skin, worked in many stripes of white and brown, the skirt—(th dress is all in one piece and fastens in front)—banded with scarlet cloth and dog-skin fur, and foot andleo- coverings of soft, patterned skin reaching above theknee—there you have Ustynia, the belle of Kolguev. Anka was a replica of her sister on a smaller scale. She would be about fourteen years old.

USTVNIA Face page 130 FRIENDS 131 They served our stewed goose in wooden bowls, andlaughed much at our efforts to sit cross-leeeed in theirfashion. I made them some cocoa, which they said was very, very good. Yes yes. Then old Uano beggedmy pipe. There was no pipe on the island, he said, andso I believed, for he let it go out every other moment.Everything we had, our matches, our spoons and forks, our boots and guns, were a wonder and delight to them. All were critically examined, and they wanted to havethem all. Well, we laughed and talked till 3.30 a.m., then laydown on our reindeer skins . for sleep. Hyland wasasleep in a moment. But I lay for a long time smokingmy pipe and taking in all the details of this curious placein which we lay. Then I too curled up, determined tosleep as long as ever I could. For I felt we deserved it.The first part of our endeavour was at any rate achieved. We had found the Samoyeds.1 1 (1) Just as the Ostiaks call themselves Habi, so the Samoyeds call them
