On March 7, 2024, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the Strait of Tartary.

Summary edit

Description
English: Sitting in Russia’s Far East and separating the mainland from Sakhalin Island, the Strait of Tartary wears a cap of ice for about half of each year. The ice becomes so thick that it shuts down boat traffic between the Sea of Okhotsk (north) and the Sea of Japan (East Sea), in the south, for the winter. Freeze up begins in November and ice leaves the Strait around mid-May. On March 7, 2024, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the Strait of Tartary. A thick cover of ice covers the Strait solidly from the eastern Russian coast to the shore of Sakhalin Island from near the narrowest point northward. South of the constriction, which measures about 4.5 miles (7.3 km) wide, solid ice quickly gives way to thinner sea ice. The sea ice is gray in color, suggesting it is water-logged, and sports many large cracks where open water is visible.
