English: Icknield Way / Westmill Lane. At this point the old Roman Icknield Way is called Westmill Lane. There are many instances of the Icknield Way retaining its old name in this area. This is not one of them. To my mind this must be one of the most crooked bits of Roman road anywhere in the country - just look at it! There are stories of the ghosts of Roman Soldiers marching up and down here. The road passes Gerry's Hole (TL1831) where the ghost of Gerry (who fell into the pool and drowned on the way home from the pub one night) is to be found. |
