Notes
  • Significance: The old rectory adjacent to Iglesia San Mateo de Congrejos was used as headquarters by General Abercromby during the 1797 British attacks on San Juan. Easily identified by its two short square towers and brick dome over the sanctuary, this Church is typical of the modest religious architecture throughout rural Puerto Rico. Of special interest are painted panels in the pendentives of the domes and on the walls of the Sanctuary, the "torno" (turn table), and speaking grill which allowed the Carmelite nuns to maintain the privacy of their vows.
