| Description |
English: Illusory door under Mare Street bridge This mysterious, peeling image pasted just above the waterline on the far side of the canal aroused my curiosity. Turns out it's left over from a 2008 exhibition called Public View which aimed 'to surprise the passer-by with the unexpected placement of artworks'. It's by Mattia Reiniger and called 'Choices'.
"The work shows a door in the wall underneath Mare St bridge. The two signs next to the door indicate the two directions west and east, guiding the passer-by. The door represents an alternative direction, right there in front of us. We are separated from it by the canal, a barrier that impedes us to reach out and embrace that choice. It could be an allegory for the way society imposes certain conventions upon us, while dismissing alternatives." |
