This instrument, when used as a prismatic compass, is placed in ahorizontal position, the altitude and clinometer dial being fixed to thestop so that the compass divisions are rendered visible through the open-ing, and can be used with the prism in the usual manner. As an altitudeinstrument it is placed in a vertical position, as illustrated, the stop beingpulled up or released. The altitude arc then swings, and its divisionscome into line with the prism and metal sight line. When applied as anordinary clinometer, the readings are observed through the opening, whichcorresponds to the position of the clinometer base.
