By theflashing of pistols, Jesse saw that Frank and his twofriends had made their exit, and were firing into thecrowd as opportunity offered, taking care to notshoot toward him. He determined to leave theshanty, but two burly roughs, with huge knives,stood in the way. A pistol ball quieted one ofthem, and almost before the flash of his pistol hadfaded away, and before the other could think ofusing his knife, Jesse sprang upon him and dealthim a fearful blow on the head with, the butt of hispistol. The gambler sank mth a groan to the earth,and with a spring, Jesse joined his friends on the out-side. By this time a light had been placed on abarrel behind the slab which served for a counter.Three men were seen weltering in tlicir own blood—dead. Four others were lying writhing in pain, andall were gory from the blood which flowed fromghastly wounds.

ON THE PACIFIC SLOPE. 1( 9 The crowd saw all this at a glance. The dead andthe wounded in the shanty did not include any oithe strangers. The crowd yelled for vengeance onthe authors of the bloody tragedy. There was ashout that awakened the mountain echoes for milesaround, as the infuriated pioneers and gamblerssurged out of the shanty. Meanwhile the Jameses and their friends had re-tired a short distance from the place to ascertain theextent of the injuries they had received in themelee. It was a cloudless night and the stars shonebrightly. The leaders of the mob soon discoveredthe four Missourians, and ran,yelling, toward them. Back, you d—dmiscreants !
