TheUrodela are confined in their distribution to the NorthernHemisphere (excepting that two or three species extendalong the Andes south of the equator). North Americais especially rich, both in species and individuals, of Uro-dela. The Anura, or toads and frogs, are found in all partsof the world, especially in South America and Australia. Families of Urodela. — Of the American Urodela,3 theSirenidae include the Siren,4 or mud-eel, of the SouthernStates. This species becomes 60 centimetres long, and isof a dark lead color (Fig. 239). It is needlessly fearedby the negro rice cultivators, who slaughter it in greatnumbers. 1 Newts may be captured by sweeping with a net the muddy bottomsof small, spring-fed pools.
