The Black-breasted Kalij (A) ranges over a large part ofNorthern Burma, extending in the north to Eastern Bootan,in the west to Chittagong, south to the Northern Arakan Hills, and east as far as Bhamo. The VermiccUated Kalij (B) is met with in Pegu as far westas the valley of the Irrawady, in Northern Tenasserim andNorth-western Siam, and, according to Gates, extends up theIrrawady Valley as far as Bhamo, though this latter state-ment requires confirmation. Anderson^s Kalij (C), first obtained in the Kachin Hillseast of Bhamo, has since been met with at Dargwin, and isprobably found from that place northwards along the Sal weenValley to Yun-nan, but its range is not yet defined. It must first be stated that A does not intergrade with theBlack-backed Kalij of Sikhim and Western Bootan, and ijthe ranges of the two birds do overlap in Central Bootan, which they probably do not, no intermediate birds have as yetbeen recorded. In the south of the Arakanrange, on the road between Prome and Tonghoo, G. oatesi(BA) occurs, the males being evidently much more nearlyallied to B than to A, though they resemble A in having thefeathers of the lower back and rump more or less distinctlymargined with white. The female differs from all the alliedforms in having the outer tail-feathers mostly chestnut. It will thus be seen that in Arakan, a large tract, betweenthe ranges of A and B, we find two intermediate forms of Kalij, practically bridging over the great differences between typicalspecimens of A and B, and no doubt w
