The corner stone was laid on the 16thof September, 1863; but the work was carried on with-out haste, and it was not till December 8, 1867, thatthe Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception wassolemnly dedicated. Meanwhile other shrines of religion arose; St.Albans Church, begun in 1848 by Rev. Mr. Hamilton,was comxDleted in 1864. A church was raised at DIOCESE OF BURLINGTON. 633 Poiiltney by Rev. Thomas Lyncli in the same year ;and St. Patricks at Wallingford in 1866. By this time the diocese had nineteen active priests,twenty-seven churches, and one in progress, besidethe Cathedral, an orphan asylum, eight schools, and aCatholic population of twenty-eight thousand. The see of Portland was erected by his HolinessPope Pius IX. in the year 1853, at the request of theFathers of the First Plenary Council of Baltimore,the diocese embracing the States of Maine and New-Hampshire. The Very Rev. Henry B. Cosker}^ electedto the new see, declined the appointment and re-turned the bulls, nor was it till 1855 that Portlandobtained its first Bishop in the person of Rev. DavidW. Bacon, pastor of the Church of the Assumption,Brooklyn. He was born in New York, September 15,1815, and after a preliminary course in the Academyof Mr. James Shea, went to the college and seminaryin Montreal and to Mount St. Marys. He was or-dained by the Archbishop of Baltimore, December 13,1838. After some service at Utica he was sent toBrooklyn to form a new parish.
