Text Appearing Before Image: had previouslybeen drawn in connection with my studies about Zoroaster andthe religion of ancient Persia. A Swedish missionary, the Rev.E. John Larson and his wife, who have done much evangelisticwork among the Yezidis of Tiflis and the vicinity and havethus become familiar with their manners, customs, and beliefs,were my informants. The Yezidis are chiefly found in the Caucasus, Armenia,and Kurdistan, although they are scattered over a considerablywider territory, their headquarters being in the province ofMosul, Mesopotamia. Owing to the persecutions which theyhave suffered throughout their history, their number is not large;nevertheless they are said to number twelve thousand in theregion of the Caucasus alone, and there are at least severalhundred Yezidis living in the immediate vicinity of Tiflis.They do not speak of themselves ordinarily as Yezidis, but em-ploy the names of their respective tribes or adopt by preferencethe term Dasni, a tribal designation in the neighborhood of
