Gold was discovered and Bro.Hudson and others immediately start-ed up the canyon and found consider-able of it; one piece, worth about$5, was dug out with a pen knife byBro. Hudson. Elder Hudson workedthree weeks in the mine and got out$1,700 worth of gold. The followingJune he left for the Valley, and ar-rived Sept. 23, 1848. After a fewdays rest, he started for CouncilBluffs, and brought his family to Utahin the spring of 1849. He became oneof the early settlers of Grantsville. They embraced theMormon faith in 1834, and laterjoined the Mormons in Clay County,Mo., and were di-iven from there to 748 LATTER-DAY SAINT Caldwell County where they shared inthe persecutions of the saints at thatplace. During the Illinois troublesJefferson Hunt served as a major inthe Nauvoo Legion. When the callwas made for the Mormons to enlistfor service against Mexico, he joinedthe Battalion and was chosen captainof the first company. His eldest twosons also enlisted in the Battalion, hisson Marshall being the youngest mem-ber (seventeen years old). The Huntfamily accompanied the Battalion asfar as Santa Fe. After making themarch to California, Captain Hunt andson Marshall reached Salt Lake Valleyin October, 1847. That fall CaptainHunt went to California with his sonsand fifteen others to obtain provisions,cattle, seeds and grain.
