ge perhaps 2000 feetabove those of the Marus, and as their crops ripen amonth or two later, they come down into the warmervalleys about this time for food, bringing potatoes, salt,pigs, cows and iron pots in exchange. Most of thesethings they themselves have obtained from the Chinese,who rarely penetrate into this part of the country.From these men I bought a few new potatoes the sizeof small marbles. Presently we came upon a remarkable sight. Some carnivorous animal had left its droppings ina rock pool amongst the boulders, and the poisonedwater had tainted the atmosphere for yards aroundwith its rank acridness. From all directions thisreeking cesspool had attracted the most gorgeousbutterflies imaginable, and they had come in theirdozens. The pool was a quivering mass of brilliantinsects, and still others hovered to and fro over theunsavoury meal, awaiting their turn to alight; fromtime to time a butterfly, impatient of waiting, wouldpush itself amongst the already packed multitude,
