Fourth of July Celebrated

By Cpl. Han, Jae-ho USAG Humphreys Public Affairs

CAMP HUMPHREYS – The 236th anniversary of the United States’ Independence was celebrated, here, July 4 with various events, including Fun Runs, softball, eating contests, dj music and band performances and fireworks, at Soldier’s Field.

Giant slides, mini playground rides and a dunk tank were available on the field to provide entertainment to visitors, and foods and beverages were also on sale.

According to Paul Parrish, the Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation special events coordinator, who began preparations for this event months ago, “this event couldn’t happen without the many Soldiers and Family members who volunteer their time. For people to be able to come and have a good time, someone has to volunteer their time to help make it happen.”

“It is great to be a volunteer and support the community,” said Staff Sgt. Robert Ogg, [DO YOU HAVE HIS UNIT?] a volunteer at the event. “It is awesome for Camp Humphreys to host an even to celebrate Independence Day, and I am honored to participate in it.”

The event also featured hot dog, watermelon and pie eating contests, and winners were presented with iPod Touch and iPod Nano for showing off their eating capacity.

“I feel good, had my lunch for today,” said Spc. Robert Ribaudo, [UNIT?] who ate 10 hotdogs in 8 minutes to win the hot dog eating contest event.

The winner of the chocolate cream pie eating contest, Pfc. Jacob Ferencz [UNIT?] said that “I felt bad for other participants because they had no chance (against him).”

The celebration concluded with musical performances by the Armed Forces Entertainment band “Anchored,” and fireworks, that lit up the sky of Pyeongtaek for about 20 minutes.

“They had a good set up for the family today,” said Staff Sgt. Champhonsak Vongphachanh, of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys. “It was a good day to come out with the family and enjoy the day.”
