Text Appearing Before Image:
tative skill is being acquired by practice. In modern European art academies, the creativepower usually lies fallow in the most importantyears of a students mental development, whilethe imitative skill is being acquired by a drearyroutine of more or less mechanical exercises. Inthis respect art-teaching only repeats the errors ofwhat we mis-call classical education in publicschools; but the habit thereby engendered ofregarding art as a technical process, rather than acreative faculty, explains to a great extent thearchaeological critics standpoint in regard toIndian art. The upper partof the picture is simply but beautifully composed, with a broad, winding river, a thick clump of trees, and the star-lit sky; the dark, heavy foliage massedagainst the sky, and the silver-grey reflection onthe water. Some stunted shrubs and a suggestionof a mountain stream fill up the foreground. Thepicture is painted in a very low key, but the colouris luminous and full of atmosphe
