Description

There's a marvelous contrast inside the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela between the hard, dark, worn stone surfaces and the bright paintings and soft fabric curtains with which the churches are furnished.

Walking through the interior, one glimpses partial views of brilliant paintings and archaic surface decorations between the many columns that support the building.

Those are the elements I sought to capture in this image.

The church of Bet Maryam dates to the 13th century. I do not know the age of the painting of the Virgin Mary and the infant Jesus,
