DescriptionInterieur oud gevangeniscel Fort Nieuw Amsterdam.jpg |
English: In this prison cell like the many other prison cells in this prison built in 1982, imprisonment also became the standard punishment in Suriname after Dutch law prohibited corporal and capital punishment in 1870. In the fort, convicts were put to work as forced laborers. There were 9 to 15 prisoners in one cell, without any cooling or hygiene facilities. During the Second World War (WW2) people from the Dutch East Indies were interned in this jail. They were suspected of sympathizing with the German National Socialist Movement (NSB). The crew of the Goslar, a German merchant ship that was sunk in the Suriname River in 1940 and that is still there, were also imprisoned here. During the 60s and 70s, the prisoners were given more freedom to move around. They had to work on the grounds in the fort's vicinity.
