DescriptionInterior View of Lady Chapel - geograph.org.uk - 440276.jpg |
English: Interior View of Lady Chapel. An interesting story was related to me concerning the crucifix which I assume to be the one shown on the far wall in the photo. The crucifix was discovered in a German second hand shop window by the wife of the British Ambassador during the late 1930s. Only after repeated knocking did the shop owner reluctantly open the door. He was Jewish and was adamantly not interested in doing any selling as he had more pressing concerns regarding the safety of his family in the deteriorating situation of Nazi Germany towards the close of the decade. The wife of the British Ambassador was so moved that she persuaded her husband to use his offices to permit the Jewish shop owner and his family to leave Berlin. And so the crucifix ended up in England. A moving story.
