Summary edit

Description
English: Interior of St Mary's, Fulmodeston. Looking towards the west end. This church served Fulmodeston and St John the Baptist served the neighbouring parish of Croxton. Both churches were abandoned in the 1880's when a new church, Christchurch, was built in Fulmodeston to serve both parishes, see 320373.

St Mary's is now hidden in its own little wood where the trees have grown and spread in the churchyard. Its roof has fallen but the tower, walls and some window tracery remain along with the monuments both inside the church and in the surrounding churchyard. It is a very atmospheric place - and also indicative of how ruthlessly unsentimental the Victorians could be about old buildings.

I haven't visited Croxton yet but from the excellent Norfolk Churches site it is apparent that the same situation pertains, see http://www.norfolkchurches.co.uk/croxton/croxton.htm. St Mary's also has an entry on the same site, see http://www.norfolkchurches.co.uk/fulmodestonold/fulmodestonold.htm as does Christchurch, see http://www.norfolkchurches.co.uk/fulmodestonnew/fulmodestonnew.htm
