In the year 1900-1901 there were about 37,000,000barrels of beer made by the 6,440 brewers of the United Kingdomwho brew for sale, and of this total over one-twentieth wasbrewed by the single firm of Guinness, who have by far thelargest output of any firm in the United Kingdom or, indeed, in theworld. The unique position occupied by Guinnesss Brewery is shownby the fact that they manufacture more than two-thirds of all the beerbrewed in Ireland. The first Guinness connected with the great brewerywas Mr. Arthur Guinness, who purchased the concern as it then stood froma Mr. Rainsford in 1759, and it is understood that even at that date thebrewery was already long established.
