Summary edit
DescriptionIron Age settlement near Stockton Wood, Stockton - geograph.org.uk - 493451.jpg |
English: Iron Age settlement near Stockton Wood, Stockton This view looking north-north-east is of chalk downland adjacent to Stockton Wood at a height of about 200m. The bumpiness of the ground here are the remains of a huge Iron Age settlement covering 60 acres which continued right through the Roman period and which reached its prosperity in the mid-late 4th century. The settlement covered not only the downland here and to the north-west, but also the eastern end of Stockton Woods behind the camera. A part of this downland, as well as this end of the woods, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
Out of sight before the clump of trees, Ralph's Cover, is a dry chalk valley, called a bottom, which runs north-east down to the valley of the River Wylye. This valley is the foot of the hills in the far distance. |
