Summary edit

Description Masnad Ali Isa Khan Niazi was the son of Niaz Aghwan, Chamberlain in the court of Sher Sah Suri and later in the service of Islam Shah Suri. He must have been an influential and rich noble belonging to the Niazi clan of Afghanistan. During his own life time he built in 1547-48 a fine mausoleum for himself in the vicinity of the hallowed Dargha of Hazrat Nizamuddin Aulia. We do not know much about Isa Khan. But what makes his tomb special is the fact that Mughal Emperror Humayun’s widow Hamida Banu Beghum chose to build a masterpiece of a mausoleum for her husband, just adjacent to Isa Khan’s tomb. Not only this, she decided to borrow many features of the tomb in the design of Humayun’s Tomb, which in turn was the precursor of the world famous Taj Mahal. The enclosed compount, the chhatris, surrounding the main central dome, the garden surrounding the main edifice, all these features of Isa Khan’s tomb were incorporated in the tomb of Huamyun. The shape of the dome was also a clear transition from the crude Lodhi Era shape to the proportionate shape of the Mughal days. Undoubtedly, this is one of the most proportionate and aesthetically pleasing monument of the pre Mughal days.
