English: Islands In The South Discovered by Le Maire and Schouten in 1617 Striking sea chart of part of the South Pacific explored by Jacques Le Maire and Willem Schouten in 1616 (not 1617), during his circumnavigation of the world. Includes a sailing ship and compass rose, with a number of notes in Italian regarding prevailing winds and currents. The map notes islands northeast of Tahiti in French Polynesia, which were discovered in the South Pacific, including: Islas Tiberones (Flint Island, Kiribati) discovered by Magellan in 1521 Honden I (Puka-Puka atoll, Tuamoto Archipelago) sighted by Magellan in 1521 (called San Pablo) and visited by Le Maire and Schouten on April 10, 1616. Waterland Iland (Manihi or Paeua atoll, Part of the King George Islands Group -- iles Du Roy Georges ) visited by Le Maire and Schouten in April 1616. Vlegen Island (Ahe art of the King George Islands Group -- iles Du Roy Georges ) visited by Le Maire and Schouten in April 1616. Sondergrond Island (Takaroa or Takpua art of the King George Islands Group -- iles Du Roy Georges ) visited by Le Maire and Schouten in April 1616. S. Pietro ( we were not able to identify this island). Jacques Le Maire and Willem Schouten were commissioned to find a new route to the Pacific and the Spice Islands to avoid the trading monopoly of the Dutch East India Company and to find the Southern Continent (Terra Australis). The chart appeared in Dudley's Arcano del Mare, one of the rarest and most highly sought after sea atlases of the 17th Century. Dudley, an Englishman, produced this exquisite work while living in Florence. Dudley labored for decades before finally releasing the first edition of this work when he was 73 years old. A nice example, with a striking compass rose and characteristically fine engraving style. From the second edition of the Arcano del Mare. |
