Object history
English: In 1594 Tintoretto's immense canvas replaced Guariento's painting, which was destroyed by a fire in the Palazzo Ducale in 1577. The painting hung above the gilded throne and depicts the image of Paradise with hundreds of figures placed according to a series of curved lines in concentric perspective with the representations of angels and saints. The movement builds up towards a brilliant central point on high dominated by the figures of Christ and the Virgin.

Over the doge's throne is Tintoretto's masterpiece, Paradise, the largest oil painting in the world, 22 metres by seven metres. Christ and Mary are surrounded by a heavenly host of 500 saints. It is a huge, black, gloomy, and confused picture, sadly lacking focal concentration, but containing a vast number of beautiful single figures.

Grand Chamber Council - This is the largest room in the palace. It had to big as by 1512 an estimated 2,622 noblemen were entitled to sit on the Maggior Consiglio. Like the Vatican's famous balcony in Rome, it was from this room that the newly elected Doge would be presented to the throngs in the Piazzetta square below.
