It is still surrounded hy walls of consider-able antiquity; and the old town, in its centre, also has its wallsand fosses. Udine contains numerous palaces of the Friulian noblesse(some with faded paintings on their facades), and presents manypoints of resemblance to Venice. The central point of the town is the Oastlb (PI. B, C, 3; nowbarracks), erected by Oiov. Fontana in 1517, on an eminence, whichaccording to tradition was thrown up by Attila, in order that hemight thence survey the conflagration of Aquileia (p. 310).
