Summary edit

Description Sceloporus occidentalis bocourtii—Coast Range fence lizard. The Coast Range fence lizard, or bluebelly, feeds on a wide range of insects including mosquitoes. This may be a reason why this lizard is often found sunning themselves near water features, They serve animals, including humans, in another way. Ticks that carry Lyme disease feed on fence lizards blood. The blood contains a protein that kills the Lyme disease bacteria carried by the tick clearing it from gut of the tick thus ensuring the tick is no longer a vector for the disease. Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.
