Description
English: An actual survey of the River Orinoco from the great mouth up to the City of Angostura [cartographic material] / taken in the years 1802 & 3 by Alexr. Briarly Master R.N. & Commander of the Ship Edward Foote. In the emply of Messrs. I. & A. Atkins

This manuscript chart was produced between 1802 and 1803 by a lieutenant in the British Navy named Alexander Briarly while serving as a contraband patroller based out of Trinidad. Its unique representation of the lower portion of the Orinoco River—between Angostura (currently Ciudad Bolivar) and the Atlantic Ocean—keeps the river and its banks in clear focus. It also provides coastal views of the Orinoco’s primary estuary as seen from the Atlantic Ocean. Briarly seems to have prepared this chart for ship pilots who needed to study the Orinoco prior to attempting to navigate it.
