DescriptionJackson Hotel, Pioneer Square, Seattle.jpg |
English: The Jackson Hotel at 167-169 (217-219 prior to 1898) Washington Street, Seattle, also known as the Columbus House. Prior to the great Seattle fire this lot was occupied by two wood-frame saloons, Pat Welch's Ideal Saloon at 217 and John McCary's Idaho Saloon at 219. The property remained vacant immediately after the fire. Despite being built in 1893 when very little construction activity was happening in the city, no mention is made of this building's genesis in newspapers of the time, though several real estate briefs imply that John McCary still owned this property near the time of construction. First mention of the Columbus House is made November 1893, reporting the crimes of several of its tenants. In that year's city directory Simon Trabuccatto is listed as proprietor. In the 1900 city directory Stefano Raggio is listed as the saloon and hotel operator at 167 Washington with Ed McSorley operating a saloon in the other store room at 169 Washington. The Columbus saloon (and later, Columbus Cafe, during prohibition, though the alcohol continued to flow evidenced by numerous raids and shutdowns) was located on the ground floor, operated after 1900 by Italian-Americans John Cicoria and John Garbarino; it was a popular resort for Seattle's Italian immigrant community. Cicoria, a colorful and controversial local figure, made many enemies in the Italian community and at city hall and in 1919 would meet his end after an argument with attorney Edward Kienstra outside the latter's office in the Pioneer Building led to Cicoria getting shot and dying from his injuries shortly afterwards. The Columbus Cafe continued to operate throughout the life of the building until damage caused by the 1949 earthquake led to its condemnation and demolition. The site has remained a fenced-off hole in the ground ever since. |
