Summary edit
DescriptionJamaica - Toyota Dyna.jpg |
English: The Dyna is another small commercial vehicle unknown to most in North America. It is a small cab-over truck that competes strongly with the Mitsubishi Fuso Canter and the smaller Isuzus around the world.
Most cars and light trucks in Jamaica are not purchased new. Used cars dominate the market, and most of these are sold by importers who bring them from Japan. These cars, built for the Japanese market, come over almost totally unmodified. In this case, the Japanese text on the back of this little box truck has remained untouched. The Japanese used car market is unique. In Japan, the government encourages the purchase of new cars fairly regularly with very strict inspection laws. As a result of this, most of their cars end up back on dealer lots after 3-5 years. These vehicles have a few good traits: -They stay in good shape because Japanese roads are very good and they are rarely driven into the ground by their owners there. -Their price in Japan is low because so many of them end up on the used market and the government doesn't encourage citizens putting them back on the road there. -Add to all of this the fact that Japanese vehicles tend to be remarkably rugged and reliable and don't require too much maintenance. These factors make them perfect for sale to developing countries, which is why there are so many older Japanese vehicles on roads in places like Kenya, Uganda, Botswana, Afghanistan, Jamaica, etc. The people there can afford them, they never break and the Japanese are willing to get rid of them quickly. Everybody wins. This Japanese used car trade is now worth well over US$3 Billion annually. |
