Description
English: James Erskine, 2nd Lord Grange, 2nd son of Charles, 5th Earl of Mar, as a boy, full-length, in classical dress holding a staff in his right hand, with his dog. " In my view this is an early painting by John Scougall, just like the painting of his brother John Erskine, 6th Earl of Mar, as a Boy. Full length paintings by John Scougall are very rare and these are lovely examples of his early, strong mature period. Among the paintings at Alloa Tower there is a fine group of paintings by the Scougall painters, mainly by John Scougall. They show a continued patronage of the Earls of Mar for the Scougalls, particularly in the 1680s." Carla van de Puttelaar, Art Historian.
