Summary edit

Description The 3 1/2-story James Roosevelt House at 58 Bleecker Street between Broadway and Lafayette Streets, on the corner of Crosby Street, in the NoHo neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, was built c.1822-23 in the Federal style. It has an extant, although altered, 2-story carriage house in the rear, facing Crosby Street, which was probably built c.1825-27. James Roosevelt was Franklin Delano Roosevelt's great grandfather, and the founder of the Hyde Park branch of the Roosevelt family. In 1857, Elizabeth Blackwell, the first female doctor in the United States, opened the New York Infirmary for Women and Children in the building, and after 1891, the building began to be converted for commercial use. It is located in the NoHo Historic District. (Source: NYLPC NoHo Historic District Designation Report)
