Sanguine, crayon noir et aquarelle 25 x 15 cm

Jean-Benjamin de La Borde est représenté par Carmontelle de profil, tenant une clé, symbole de sa charge de premier valet de chambre du Roi. En arrière-plan, la célèbre horloge astronomique de Claude-Siméon Passemant (1702-1769) présentée à Louis XV.

Au verso de l'encadrement, une étiquette avec l'inscription suivante : « Mr de la borde, premier valet de chambre du Roy et fermier général. Il joint à plusieurs talents agréables un coeur excellent. Compositeur de musique très distingué, il pourrait encore passer pour un meilleurs géographes de France. Il est fort aimé du Roy auquel il est dévoué avec une sorte d'idolatrie. Mr de la borde vient d'épouser la fille unique de Mr de Vimes, jeune personne pétrie de grâces, de charmes et douces vertus et de toutes les qualités brillantes de son père. Ce portrait a été dessiné par Carmontelle en 1762.
