Jeff Rowley, Minnie Vuong and Danilo Couto at Big Wave Awards 2012 Big Wave Surfer Jeff Rowley Places 4th in the World as an Elite Big Wave Surfer At the Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards on 4 May 2012 in Anaheim California, Big Wave Surfer and Adventure Waterman, Jeff Rowley was awarded 4th place in the world as an elite big wave surfer. His outstanding surfing performance at ‘Jaws’ Peahi Maui, Hawaii on 30 January 2012 earned him a finalist position in the prestigious Sony Xperia ‘Ride of the Year’ category. On the event night, host and professional big wave surfer Alex Gray commends Jeff Rowley on his performance at Jaws, “Jeff shows up to Jaws, paddles into some extremely large waves”. “It took paddling two of the craziest swells…having the respect of every single big wave paddler in here, you completely deserve this tonight Jeff” “[Jeff] you’re one of the most humble and quiet guys…and went straight to centre stage. Congratulations, I hope you win tonight”. On being awarded 4th place in the Global Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards, Rowley exudes “Surfing Jaws was my Everest, and it’s amazing to be recognized for my achievements”. “I spent the last 18 months with laser beam focus on preparation and training for surfing Jaws, so overcoming my fears to paddle into the wave was fulfilling my dream”. On 4 January 2012, Jeff Rowley’s rides at ‘Jaws’ made history when he became the first Australian to successfully paddle into Jaws without the assistance of jet ski. The 2012 Global Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards first place for ‘Ride of the Year’ was awarded to Nathan Fletcher for his tow-in ride at Teahupoo, Tahiti.
