Summary edit
DescriptionJerome, Arizona (45858250834).jpg |
Jerome, Arizona was founded in the late 19th century on Cleopatra Hill overlooking the Verde Valley. It exists because of mining, mainly copper but also gold, silver and other minerals and elements. The quarries and mines are large and several underground shafts were made around and under the town. As a consequence subsidence destroyed several of Jerome's buildings, which slid slowly downhill during the first half of the 20th century - including the jail and the post office. Notice also, the building on the right of my photo. Mining came to a halt in the 1950's and the town's population dropped to almost nothing. Concerted efforts were made to revitalise the town by getting it designated as a National Historic Landmark and then attracting tourists - which appears to have succeeded well. I found it to be a quirky, fascinating place and hope to revisit. |
