Description

The Western Wall is a remnant of the original retaining walls of the Temple Mount, where ancient Jewish Jerusalem's First and Second Temples were built. The Jews never got a chance to rebuild the temple a third time in the centuries before Islam came to Palestine. The Muslims built the Dome of the Rock on the same location, believed to be part of the prophet Muhammed's famed night-time journey. Both picked the spot for the same reason: tradition holds that that part of Mount Moriah is where the biblical patriach Abraham (almost) sacrificed his son. The top of the Temple Mount is now reserved for the Muslim holy sites, and only the area around this section of the wall is available for Jewish ceremonies. The wall is sectioned off into men's (left) and women's (right) sections; the wooden walkway over at the right leads up to the Temple Mount and is the entrance non-Muslim visitors must use when they are visiting the top.
