Summary edit

Description
English: Jetty Marsh, Newton Abbot Teignbridge District Council bought Jetty Marsh in 1993, but it does not seem to have been kept in a tidy state. On the short wall at the entrance to the basin is an inscription "George Templar Esqr. 1824" - It cannot currently be seen due to overhanging vegetation. This photo depicts the canal basin entrance to the right. At the seaward end of the two mile long Stover canal, this canal basin was built in 1792, and was in use until 1939. Ball clay from the local pits was transported in barges, and thence down the Whitelake Channel and into the Teign Estuary to Teignmouth. From there it was shipped to the pottery towns of the Midlands. Between 1820 and 1858, granite from the Haytor quarries was also transported.
