Description
English: Arabian Nights Images - Joan Kiddell-Monroe

Joan Kiddell-Monroe provided the illustations for Fairy Tales from the Arabian Nights, edited and arranged by E. Dixon, first published by J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd, London in 1907. This book (which was loaned to me by a friend; thanks Safiyya!) includes color plates along with the line drawings. For example, the image at right is a detail from a color plate captioned "I saw a diamond, as big as the egg of an ostrich, lying on a low stool" from "The Story of Zobeide Told by Herself."

All these illustrations have a lovely flowing style, with a highly Oriental look.

The image on the left is from the front page of "The King of Persia and the Princess of the Sea." This one is a detail from an image in "The Speaking Bird." And here's our friend Morgiana, in "Morgiana danced several dances" from "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves."

And here she is at it again, captioned "She poured enough into every jar to stifle and destroy the robber within." Here I'm amused by the donkey butts in the stalls, and a bit disturbed by the hand hanging out of one of the jars.
