Português: João de Andrade Corvo. (1824-1890) João de Andrade Corvo (1824-1890) nasceu em Torres Novas, a 30 de janeiro de 1824, vindo a falecer em Lisboa, no dia 16 de fevereiro de 1890. Foi uma das principais figuras do panorama cultural português do séc. XIX. Com espírito multifacetado e dotado de brilhantismo, destacou-se em várias áreas do saber, no ensino, nas ciências naturais, engenharia, medicina, matemática e literatura, tendo sido membro da Academia de Ciências de Lisboa. Dedicou-se, em especial, à agronomia, ciência que lecionou na Escola Politécnica de Lisboa e no Instituto Agrícola, e aprofundou o estudo das doenças que afligiram a vinicultura em Portugal e nas ilhas, nos finais dos anos 40 e inícios de 50 do séc. XIX. Notabilizou-se na política, sendo empossado em vários cargos relevantes nos governos de Fontes Pereira de Melo e do conde de Ávila e Bolama, contexto no qual a sua ação e as suas decisões visionárias se revelaram benéficas para o desenvolvimento do país. Foi relevante a sua atividade modernizadora enquanto ministro das Obras Públicas, bem como nas políticas reformadoras que empreendeu enquanto ministro da Marinha e do Ultramar. Com a pasta do Ministério dos Negócios Estrangeiros, Andrade Corvo delineou novas linhas orientadoras das relações diplomáticas portuguesas cultivadas com as potências estrangeiras, sendo considerado o pai da diplomacia moderna portuguesa. Foi, em 1871, distinguido como par do Reino. |
