Summary edit
DescriptionJohn J. Carroll Building, 3rd Street, Newark, OH - 52545987995.jpg |
English: Built in 1919-20, this Renaissance Revival-style building was constructed to house the John J. Carroll Department Store, established in 1886 as Carroll and Company, being renamed John J. Carroll’s Department Store when John J. Carroll consolidated his ownership in the business in 1898, buying out the other original stakeholders. The store was owned by the Carroll family until 1982, when it was sold to the Ulhman Company, but remained open for a time afterwards under the name John J. Carroll, having since closed. The building features a red brick exterior, limestone trim, pilasters at either end of the front facade, a limestone cornice with dentils at the top of the facade, casement windows with stone lintels and belt coursing sills, wrought iron balconies, large first floor storefronts with transoms framed by stone trim, a central entrance door flanked by engaged doric columns with a canopy above and the words “John J. Carroll” in lettering above the door, a decorative stone trim surround and semi-circular balcony at the second story window above the main entry door with a cartouche above, a low slope roof with a parapet, and red brick cladding got the side and rear facades. After the department store closed, the building was converted into an office annex for Park National Bank, which is headquartered in a modernist 1950s-era building next door. The building, despite being historic, sits just outside the boundaries of the Newark Downtown Historic District. |
