Summary edit

Description
English: The John Moulton House, 5226 Genesee Street, Lancaster, New York, January 2022. Built most likely in the very late 1820s, this is an excellent example - and one of the few remaining in the area - of vernacular Greek Revival stone farmhouses of the type popularly built at the time. The rough-textured ashlar exterior and six-over-six sash windows topped with flat arch lintels are plainly visible from this perspective, while the original Greek Revival porch is tucked away around the corner. The stone walls that encapsulate the house are 20 inches thick and, remarkably, are reinforced at the roofline by a pair of metal rods to keep them in alignment. John Moulton (c. 1794-1873) was a Connecticut-born smallholder and a relation by marriage to Benjamin Bowman, founder of the hamlet of Bowmansville where the house is found today. Moulton's small farm was bounded on one side by Ellicott Creek, and he was renowned around the local area for the pickling cucumbers he grew in the bottomlands near the creek's bank.
