OBRIEN, Corporal, Company K, 23rd Infantry, 2nd Division.After his platoon commander had been severelywounded and his platoon sergeant killed, he assumedcommand of the platoon, keeping the men well upon the line, controlling their fire and, by good adviceand judgment, conserving life. This on the 6th ofJune, 1918. On June 18th a particularly pesky nest of enemymachine-guns were blazing with a deadly fire at Com-pany K. Thats this boys company—and up and atem went Corporal J. It. OBrien, of Boston. Thatmachine-gun nest received OBriens particular at-tention. For his nerve a French general decoratedhim with the Medaille Militaire and the Croix deGuerre with Palm, and kissed him on the cheek. (287 ) Cor

For exceptionally meritorious and distin-guished services. As Brigade Commander ofthe 10th Infantry Brigade, he showed greatenergy and zeal in the conduct of his Brigadeduring the major part of its manoeuvers.Later, as Division Commander of the 6thDivision, by his painstaking efforts, hebrought this division to a marked state ofefficiency, rendering services of great value tothe American Expeditionary Forces.
