Summary edit

Description
English: The John and Sarah Carmer House, 10525 Clarence Center Road, Clarence, New York, October 2020. The rationale for the house's nomination as a town landmark is its exemplary historical integrity, its status as one of the first brick buildings to be built in the town, and above all, its excellence in embodying the principles of Greek Revival architecture. Characteristic tropes of the style such as a shallow-pitched roof, symmetrical façade, and fenestration pattern of six-over-six sash windows topped by cut stone lintels are all evident in this photo, but special focus must be placed on the front entrance, framed by a pair of engaged Doric pilasters and architrave which itself are surrounded by sidelights and a transom light. The house was built in 1844 as the home of John Carmer (1805-1859), a Canadian-born farmer whose wife Sarah (1810-1892) continued living there for quite a while after his death. The east wing of the house, seen at left here, is a later but still historically significant addition.
