Summary edit

Description
English: The Johnson-Hagglund House, 254 Forest Avenue, Jamestown, New York, January 2022. Among the first homes to be built in the section of Jamestown now known as Forest Heights, this handsome two-story wood-framed residence dates most likely to the early 1870s, and its architecture can be categorized as a vernacular farmhouse style that was very common in the rural precincts and small towns of the United States at the time. However, it can also be said that the symmetry of the façade, the rather tall and narrow dimensions of the windows, and especially the square window heads that stand out against the clapboard siding lend a slight touch of the Italianate aesthetic. The enclosed front porch is a later addition. 254 Forest is also notable for its long tenure under the ownership of the same family: Swedish-born carpenter and stonemason Gustaf Johnson (1838-1923) built the place shortly after his arrival on American shores, and at his death it passed into the hands of his son-in-law and daughter, John (1869-1946) and Constance Hagglund (1872-1945), who each lived there until their respective deaths. Additionally, the rear apartment was occupied for a time by Morris Pearson ( Måns Pehrsson, 1835-1908) and his wife Elna (1838-1926), a couple of Swedish-born immigrants from Denmark who also happen to be the photographer's 4th great-grandparents.
